#3: Developed the skills of a group of project managers through hands-on mentoring

Issue
A health care institution approached IreeTec with the problem of new and intermediate level project managers knowledge level. Mistakes were being made and the managers weren’t learning enough to avoid repetition of the mistakes. The organization was rapidly growing and needed to quickly build project management skills.

Action
IreeTec proposed a mentoring program to be implemented with a group of six project managers over a six month period. The program consisted of small group training session, focused on their projects, creating the project management deliverables as the class activities. The small group sessions were supplemented with one-on-one mentoring sessions, tailored to their training needs, and to ensure that the theory was being applied to their projects in real-time. In between mentoring sessions, the students were given homework to reinforce the previous session and put their new skills to work. Participants also used MiApproach and MiMentor as additional reference materials.

Result
Upon completion of the mentoring program, the participants had deeper skills in project management, they were applying their classroom learning to their projects immediately, and they were more confident in their abilities to manage. They were then able to act as mentors to new project managers who joined the organization.
